Title: Coating and Laminating Operator III Department: Coating and Laminating Location: San Diego, CA Reports to: Coating and Laminating Shift Senior Manager or C/L Shift Manager or C/L Shift Supervisor Number of Employees Supervised: Directly: 0 Indirectly: 0
Basic Purpose of Position: This is a direct Manufacturing position. It’s holder is responsible for leading operation of either of the machines that produce the products of this department (one at a time.) This includes tasks and assignments dealing with the normal operation, change-overs, emergencies, safety and special projects within or associated with this department.
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Assuming responsibility for the quality of the goods produced on his/her machine on a regular and on-going basis.
- Ability to read, comprehend and follow the relevant procedures of this department.
- Ability to write new or modify existing procedures.
- Fulfilling requirements of the lower level operator’s positions if necessary.
- Taking a lead role in keeping the coating head areas clean and safe by following applicable housekeeping and safety procedures and being sure that those reporting indirectly also do so.
- Leading other operators in and as necessary, personally executing roll changes on the machine.
- Performing additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Lead operators or others in a responsible position.
- Lifting a 135 pound shaft from one roll and insert it into another production roll or core.
- Accepting complex assignments (that may involve some creativity) from a supervisor and being able to execute them without the supervisor’s follow-up. This includes assignments that involve several steps and significant innovation on the part of the operator. Such assignments may involve interaction with one’s outside the department.
- Maintain exemplary attentiveness to and respond appropriately to all aspects of or situations on the job during the course of the shift. This includes the direction of others in his/her charge.
- Communicate clearly and accurately during the change-over process with the next shift’s employees and communicating in depth issues to his/her own and/or the next shift’s lead operator.
- Communicating potential concerns or trends that may currently be acceptable but that may possibly become unacceptable in the future.
- Assisting with clean-up, set-up and other functions associated with job changes. Directing the activities of three other people in the clean-up and set-up process.
- Maintain a superior attendance record that includes less than 3 attendance infractions within any 6 month period.
- Reporting (and if possible correcting, initiating correction, or clearly identifying) unsafe conditions or acts to his/her direct supervisor.
- Leading the actions of 3 other operators of similar or lesser experience.
- Assuming the essential functions of the lead operator when he/she is out.
- Taking the initiative to suggest and implement (with approval) changes to the current standard operating procedures or practices so that the department efficiency, safety, or morale is improved. This includes listening to and guiding the improvement suggestions from less experienced operators.
- Being able to fill out all department paperwork assigned to operators for all situations. This includes knowing how to handle all routine situations and knowing when and who to ask for help or additional guidance if necessary.
- Making your career interests known to your supervisor in-so-far as these affect your job performance.
Non-Essential Functions of the Position:
- Clear any coating defects on all standard products without assistance from another operator. Clear coating defects as possible on new products never before produced by MSCSFI.
- Be able to handle directing the operations of both machines continuously and without constant supervision and attendance.
- Be able to quickly start up the all standard products with only occasional input from superiors or more experienced operators.
- Knowing the constructions of all of the products we typically run and know where to find and how to use product construction resource material.
- Lead the actions of 5 other operators of similar or less experience.
- Be able to investigate and solve most routine coating and web handling problems. This includes knowing when to suggest maintenance’s help and communicating the exact nature of the problem to maintenance.
Essential Requirements:
- Ability to lift a 135 pound shaft from one roll core and insert it into another production roll or core.
- Vision correctable to 20/20 in at least one eye.
- No color blindness.
